Thinking about a battery at your fast-charging site? Pick your partners before you pick the size.

Michel Verschuere, founder of Belgian balance service provider Yuso, starts with partners. The right battery size depends on the site, the country, the regulation and the grid tariffs, so CPOs need an adviser who understands all of them. They also need an EMS that can steer the battery at high frequency and integrate with the hardware behind the meter, plus an aggregator that turns the leftover flexibility into another revenue stream.

So if you had to give one piece of advice to a CPO deploying HPC in Benelux today, what would it be in short? I would say look at the right partners to advise you on the potential value of integrating a battery. Also look at the proper size of the battery. You know, it's very much specific on the site. It's very much specific also on the location, the country, the power system and the regulation, you know, the grid tariffs. Grid tariffs will in part influence the sizing of a battery that's clear. So you have to have somebody who can advise you on all that. And then also in terms of being able to steer the units at the high frequency, this is also putting a lot of demands on the EMS. So you should look at the right EMS, the right partner to deliver upon this, the right partner to integrate with all your hardware behind that meter. And then of course, a party that can aggregate flexibility that is left into the battery and that can basically make the battery in another revenue stream on your premise.
